These clients came to use with the front yard challenge of providing enough parking for their busy household and simultaneously creating a clear and inviting route for pedestrians to get to the front door. As the home was a traditional mix of limestone and brick it was decided to pull these elements into the horizontal plane of the landscape. The walkway leads to the roadside and boulevard in Wiarton limestone and the driveway parking area is accented with a brick inlay. A rich mixture of Hydrangea, Sedum, Catmint and Japanese Forest Grass were planted in bold strokes for maximum effect.
The design challenge in the backyard was to create a rich and enticing garden space on top of the underground parking and basement that exists under most of the yard. A client inspired sculpture draws the eye down a centre axis that begins inside the kitchen and terminates at the rear of the yard. Raised limestone planters frame this view and provide definition to the dining and sitting areas adjacent the home. Corten Steel planters reference some of the more modern touches found inside the home. A more traditional iron trellis accents the garage wall. Deep rich plantings soften all the edges and light beautifully as nightfall approaches.
